"The opening day (February 24, 2023) for Sunset Futsal Courts marked a milestone in breaking barriers for access to sports and recreation in an underserved Hayward community, and in promoting Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) values. The courts - East Bay's first outdoor Futsal court - represent a collaboration between Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, Hayward Unified School District, and the Alameda County Deputy Sheriff’s Activities League (DSAL), which offers free and low-cost sports programs.

The project provides access to a high-quality park facility and recreational opportunities, highlighting how small projects significantly facilitate community engagement and improve social equity. The one-acre site includes fenced and lighted Futsal courts, central gathering area, check-in booth, pavilion, restrooms, and flexible space for community events. The design prioritizes sustainability, using durable materials and capturing all on-site runoff through permeable surfacing."
