Patients at Stanford Health Care’s new Breast Imaging Clinic rest in a secluded space facing a California ornamental grass inspired viewing garden that doubles as a privacy screen. Using the visual arts concept of foreground, middleground, and background, the garden draws from two inspirations: a walled garden and California native ornamental grasses to balance a sense of enclosure and protection with vastness and freedom. Terracing does two things: it adds volume for the drought-tolerant, native planting areas and complements the site’s linear shape. The reverse side of the garden’s wall provides a central backdrop to feature a sculptural piece and is flanked on both sides with symmetrical planter boxes in tones that blend with the surrounding campus.
