As a beautification and improvement to Joseph Conrad Square in San Francisco’s North Beach/Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood, Carducci Associates’ landscape plan preserves existing trees and introduces a low-growing and varied plant palette designed to draw in and welcome visitors in all seasons through it’s changing colors and textures. The design process included meeting on site with Police Officers from the San Francisco Police Department and incorporating principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) into the design of the park. All plants are in the low-water use category, requiring minimal maintenance once established. An existing retaining wall and planter was painted orange to assist with place making and to reinforce the Fisherman’s Wharf identity. The plant material was grown at the nursery in Golden Gate Park and the planting was installed by Recreation and Parks Gardeners.
